Time to flush MP's pension: taxpayers' group

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation wants to give people something to think about when they go to the washroom.

Digital ads showing an MP’s hand taking $24 from a taxpayer’s hand will appear on screens in restrooms at 351 restaurants, clubs and fitness centres across the Greater Toronto Area, starting this week.

“We want everyone in the GTA to give MP pensions a flush of their own,” CTF federal director Gregory Thomas said in a statement released Wednesday.

The 15-second ads are designed to draw attention to the generous pension plans awarded to federal politicians.

“We spend $100,000 more on pension contributions than we do on actually paying these people,” Thomas said. “We wanted to draw public attention to that.”

Their message is not all new. The ads are the second phase of a campaign to reform MPs pension plans.

Thomas said taxpayers are squeezed for $24 for every $1 MPs contribute towards their pension plans. There’s no other pension plan like it, he said.

“Consequently we’re in a situation where by next year, we’ll have $1 billion dollars sitting in this fund that benefits fewer than a thousand Canadians,” he said.

Liberal MP John McCallum said that while MP pensions have not been a hot topic in his riding, he agrees that reforming the pensions of federal politicians is “worth consideration.”

“If the government’s going to wait until 67 for people to get their OAS, I think a case can be made to look at MP pensions,” he said.

A spokesperson for the prime minister has previously said the pension plan will be reviewed at in the fall.
“We think that the prime minister intends to honour his original commitment to scrap the parliamentary pension plan,” Thomas said.

Canadians are urged to text ‘MP’ to either 212121 or 393939 to sign a petition in support of the campaign.
