In an interview with disgraced media baron Conrad Black, Mayor Rob Ford suggested police Chief Bill Blair went after him as retribution for proposed budget cuts.

“When I told people to find efficiencies I meant everybody,” Ford said.

When Black suggested Blair was being political in disclosing police had the video of Ford smoking crack cocaine, Ford connected it to the budget.

“I think he was quite upset at that. I want to save money and I guess he disagrees with that.”

Ford also implied Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale was a pedophile for what Ford described as taking pictures outside the mayor’s Etobicoke house.

“Daniel Dale is in my backyard taking pictures. I have little kids,” Ford told Black on a taped interview that aired on Vision TV Monday night.

“He’s taking pictures of little kids. I don’t want to say that word but you start thinking what this guy is all about.”

The mayor laughed as he said, “Lucky he fled on foot because I was upset, because that’s just crossing the line.”

Black had asked Ford to recall episodes of “offensive events, abrasive events perpetrated on your and your family by the media.”

Ford started off, “Well, I guess the worst was Daniel Dale.”

The incident happened on the evening of May 2, 2012, when Ford confronted Dale who had been standing in a plot of land beside Ford’s house.

Ford called police and said surveillance cameras at his home captured Dale’s head “bobbing up and down” over his backyard fence. Ford and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, said Dale was a “peeping Tom” who was “in my backyard,” “lurking in the bushes,” “standing on cinder blocks” and “taking pictures of my kids and family.”

After a week-long investigation which included a review of the surveillance camera footage, police filed no charges against Dale, saying there was no evidence the reporter was on the mayor’s property or looked over the fence.

Nor were there photos or videos on the BlackBerry Dale dropped as he ran from Ford, police said.

Toronto Star editor Michael Cooke responded to Ford’s comments to Black with the statement: “Just when you think Mayor Ford has said the most stupid thing, such as letting the whole world know about his sex life at home, he tops himself with another outrage. Mr. Ford calling reporter Daniel Dale a pedophile tells you all you need to know about our mayor’s brain. So sad for all of us.”

Dale said Tuesday, “The mayor’s comments are categorically false. As I have said consistently since the week of the incident, I took no photos of the mayor’s family, home or property; I never set foot on his property; I never stood on blocks; I never peered over his fence or jumped to look over the fence.

“I was there simply because I had learned that the mayor had made a rare request to purchase public land.

Before I wrote an article, I wanted to make sure I knew what the land looked like, where exactly it was situated, and how it might benefit him.”

Ford also told Black police detectives were using his friend and occasional driver, Sandro Lisi, as a “prop” in order to follow around Ford.

Lisi has been charged with extortion and drug offences in connection to Project Brazen 2, an investigation launched after The Star and the website Gawker reported on the video of Ford smoking crack cocaine.

Wiretaps intercepted Etobicoke gang members discussing selling Ford drugs. Former staff members told police Ford had driven while drunk, used OxyContin and partied with a prostitute. Ford denies all of this, but has admitted to buying illegal drugs while being mayor.

Black chided Ford for “a problem of your denying things, but then you subsequently admit it, or admitting them to a certain point. I think you’ve said it yourself, it could have been handled a little better.”

Ford also said he was “never an alcoholic,” but that he did “like to have a few drinks on the weekend.”

Black, a convicted felon, signed a deal with ZoomerMedia earlier this year to host a weekly current affairs television show, which debuted in October on Vision TV.
