Swedish Royals May Sue Over 'Horny King' Review
February 1, 2011
Sweden's royals are considering suing after a newspaper ran a review -- titled "The Horny King" -– of a new biography containing scandalous allegations about King Carl XVI Gustaf.

The Left Party's newspaper, Vansterpress, published a review of "Carl XVI Gustaf -- The Reluctant Monarch." The biography, which went on sale November 4, claims the Swedish monarch has a penchant for wild sex parties featuring strippers and that he indulged in a yearlong affair with a singer-model named Camilla Henemark.

But the Vansterpress review also alleges the king used taxpayer funds to pay prostitutes, an accusation that doesn't appear in the book, Expressen newspaper reported, according to TheLocal.se, which carries Swedish news in English.

Sweden's Royal Family
Carl XVI Gustaf came to the throne in 1973, on the death of his grandfather, King Gustaf VI Adolf. The queen was born Silvia Sommerlath to a German father and a Brazilian mother. The couple met at the 1972 Olympics in Munich and married on June 19, 1976. A recent biography claims the king enjoyed wild parties with strippers and carried on a serious affair with a singer/model. His response that "these are things that happened a long time ago" didn't placate shocked Sweden's Royal Family

"And the Swedish people pay for the feasts, both weddings, parties and whores," Vansterpress said in the newspaper, according to Expressen.

A spokesman for the royal court said royal lawyers were looking into the matter.

"We don't know what actions we will take. We will wait and see what our lawyer's opinion is. We will hear from him in a couple of days," Bertil Ternert told The Local.

Ternert added that the allegation of taxpayer funds being used "has nothing to do with the book. There is no connection to that. The author of the book, he also told readers there is nothing in the book about this."

Carl XVI Gustaf became king in 1973 and has been married to the German-born Queen Silvia since 1976. The bespectacled monarch has a fatherly image, and Swedes were rather shocked by the book's lurid claims that he had been cavorting with strippers at alcohol-fueled orgies, sometimes held at a Mafia-owed club.

Matters were not helped when His Majesty, instead of issuing a denial or preserving a dignified silence, told reporters that "these are things that happened a long time ago."

A poll published on Christmas in the Aftonbladet newspaper said nearly two-thirds of Swedes would like to see Carl Gustaf abdicate the throne in favor of his daughter, Crown Princess Victoria. Victoria, 33, married her former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, in June. The groom, now styled Prince Daniel, has become very popular with Swedes.

News that the royal court may sue over the book review comes a week after the king's youngest child, Princess Madeleine, was awarded $540,000 in damages from a string of German newspapers. Articles published by the papers between 2000 and 2004 contained false details about the princess's life, including claims that she was pregnant and planning to marry.

Madeleine, now 28, did become engaged in 2009 to her longtime boyfriend, Stockholm lawyer Jonas Bergstrom, but she called it off last April amid claims that her intended had had an affair with a Norwegian former handball star.
