Good Day Readers:

Came across this video while checking out www.change.org a site using the social networking phenomenon to launch petitions this one against Trader Joe's a Southern California-based food retailer with approximately 360 outlets most in its home state.

One would hope major Manitoba food retailers would have a more socially redeeming way of disposing of excess food items (food banks, soup kitchens, low income community centers, etc.) than simply using landfills.

The height of asininity has to be the annual 4th of July Coney Island, New York Hot Dog Eating Contest sanctioned no less by The International Federation of Competitive Eating in which 20 individuals have 12 minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible. Call us old school but we were always taught to respect food.

Here's the commentary that accompanies the video.

Overview

Every year in America we throw away 96 billion pounds of food. That's 263 million pounds a day,
11 million pounds an hour, 3,000 pounds a second.
This is something that we can change in our lifetime. We imagine a world of empty dumpsters, good food in full stomachs, and regular people leading sustainable lives. Send a message to the grocery stores and tell them that you care about the environment, food waste, and hungry people--and they should too!

Sincerely,

Clare L. Pieuk
