Stockades, voyeurism and used fruits and veggies!

Political Science Student has left a new comment on your post, "Why is The Public Eye anonymous?"

At what point does what he's doing cross the line into voyeurism? I understand making the disciplinary records accessible to search engines, but is that all there is to it? I suspect a large part of what he's doing is "sticking it" to these lawyers: gloating over what's befallen them, and shaming them. Within limits this is alright but we really should think about the larger question. Is what he is doing giving the public the same voyeuristic thrill we used to get from seeing people in the stocks? If so, what he's doing is wrong, and the fact he is posting embarassing photos of them, even if some are metaphorical, makes it worse.

Dear PSS:

Thank you for writing. Couldn't agree less. We hardly think what The Public Eye (Truth To Power; www.accesstoinfo.blogspot.com; vicpopuli1@gmail.com) is doing constitutes putting people in stockades or fits your unique definition of voyeurism. Look at it this way. What will you do when you observe your workplace colleagues behaving unethically, inappropriately or in an unacceptable manner - look the other way with a blind eye? That would be even worse.

Our solution? March the transgressors down to the town square and let people throw used fruits and veggies at them!

Sincerely,
Clare L. Pieuk

If what “Truth to Power” does is defined by Voyeurism – imagine the charge that can be made against the various media forums in this world. They often take a news story – whether it is about a famous movie person or a sport star – and sell millions of dollars in advertising as the public tries to grasp every opportunity to read the inside track on some tragedy.

I don’t know that exposing criminal, unethical and inappropriate activities will ever be seen as making the public froth at the mouth and have some perverse public mob mentality like is being alleged with the gallows – but in my view it certainly does create some ability to have transparency in a profession that is ridden with bad jokes about the unethical practices that it has become known for.
