During the early 1990s we had the very good fortune to travel more than around the world on a project for the then Manitoba Institute of Management. It was funded 75% by the Canadian International Development Agency the balance by the International Organization of Consumer Unions - an umbrella not-for-profit entity (based in the Hague, Netherlands) providing financial and technical assistance to advocacy groups trying to establish chapters. Remember, this was at a time when anti-smoking campaigns were catching on in North America so the major tobacco companies were searching for new markets.

So happened the IOCU Executive Director was also the Head of Consumer Reports based in Yonkers, New York so we were given a tour of its testing facility. Very impressive indeed! It was amazing the innovative lengths staff went to ensure evaluations were fair and reliable. While there, news came a manufacturer had lost a court case that had dragged on for about 14 years alleging CR had maligned one of its product in a study.
