Hi again Vanessa. Just got off the phone with Lionel. His take was that the petition should most certainly go ahead even if in the worst case scenario we end up with only ten signatures (highly unlikely).

His reasoning is that no matter what the results it sends a powerful message to the Metis people of Manitoba that they don't have to take all of David b..l s..t. They have a mechanism available for empowering themselves, namely, the petition.

So I'm off to post it. Please keep us advised on the response you're getting and we'll post periodic updates from the Petition Co-ordinator. Given the delay, I'll probably extend the deadline to the end of February or early March.

Take Care,
Clare

Notes: "Lionel" is Lionel Chartrand" former Manitoba Legal Aid lawyer and General Legal Counsel to the website CyberSmokeSignals who wrote the petition the MMF alleges is defamatory. He "fled" the province in July of 2008 to became, if you can believe it, a Crown Prosecutor in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. He is Tully Vorcheux's best friend.

Vanessa Everton was petition co-ordinator. In November 2006 she retained Winnipeg lawyer Daryl Chicoine who at the time was with Orle Davidson Giesbrecht Bargen LLP. Today he's listed as practicing with Aikins, Macaulay & Thorvaldson LLP.
In early November 2006, Ms Everton wrote David Chartrand a letter in which she essentially said she had heard no evil, seen no evil, tasted no evil and smelled no evil in describing the MMF. Problem for Vanessa Everton is we have multiple e-mail from her which suggest otherwise. Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench Rules prevent us from publishing her letter verbatim on the internet other we would.
