How say you David Chartrand?

Frank Godon has left a new comment on your post, "Metis or not?"

I could not let this one go by without comment. First, in Mr. David Chartrand's defence even if one could claim C31 status they don't have to if they believe that their culture is Metis and not First Nation. And Mr. Chartrand under the current definition of "Metis" is distinct from other Aboriginal peoples which means distinct for cultural and nationhood purposes.

Now there is, however, some dispute as to the "script" part as Mr. Chartrand's lineage under either the Chartrand name or the name of the person who has been rumoured to be his biological father - don't have any ancestors in their lines who can claim script. Also, his rumoured biological father isn't even Metis but is French - and if this being the case then David Chartrand can only receive Metis status as the child of a First Nation citizen (his mother who can claim C31) and his French biological father, as well as, by the other parts of the Metis definition - Métis means a person who self-identifies as Métis - and is accepted by the Métis Nation.

I stand by this information and if it is incorrect then I request that Mr. Chartrand correct it with proof.

Dear Mr. Godon:
Being non-Aboriginal we are not well versed on these matters. However, it does seem to us Mr. David Chartrand could end the speculation about his lineage once and for all by publishing the results of his genealogy search.
Many of our readers are non-Aboriginal so may not be familiar with the term "script." Here's a definition from the site Saskatehewan Homstead Index (www.saskhomesteads.com/).
North West Métis Scrip
Scrip, either as land or money, was offered to Métis families to compensate them for loss of their Aboriginal title and for grievances that led to the 1885 Resistance. To qualify for scrip that was offered in 1885 the applicants had to prove they were living in the North-West Territories prior to 15 July 1870. Those who applied for scrip from 1886 - 1902 or 1906 had to prove they were living in the North-West Territories prior to 31 December 1885. The land scrip entitlement was for 240 acres that had to be selected from land that had been allocated as homestead land. Frequently this land was a long distance from where the grantees were living so they sold their scrip, often for less money than it was worth to land speculators.

The names of those who sold their land scrip and the names of those who purchased this scrip are included in the homestead index.

We too cannot let this one go by without comment. When you filed your nomination papers to run for the position of MMF President in the June 2010 election:
(1) Was there any requirement linked to the Federation's constitution which required you, or any other candidate for that matter, to declare in writing you are Metis?

(2) Was proof required such as a copy of the results from a genealogy search?

Sincerely/Clare L. Pieuk

To answer your questions - the only requirement to run in the MMF elections was that you be a member of the MMF which in turns means that you need to prove that you are Metis with script and genealogy - which I had done previously in Feb when I applied for my new MMF card. But as for any proof needed when filing nomination papers - No only that you were a member in good standing in the MMF.

I might add that Land scrip has nothing to do with being Metis, its called Halfbreed scrip.

Any and everyone had some land scrip, but that doesnt prove your Metis, its the Halfbreed scrip you want.
