Courtroom 308!

Good Day Readers:

Spent the morning in provincial court The Honourable Brent D. Stewart presiding.

We're closely tracking the case of Judge Brian M. Corrin (pictured below) who late in February of 2011 was charged by the Winnipeg Police Service with assault and uttering a threat against a Celia Corrin.
Judge Corrin is represented by Richard J. Wolson, Q.C. founding member of Winnipeg-based Gindin Wolson Simmonds Roitenberg specializing exclusively in criminal law. Many may recall Mr. Wolson as Lead Counsel to the Oliphant Inquiry. Commissioner Jeffrey J. Oliphant is a former Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench Chief Justice. The Inquiry was struck and publicly convened in May of 2009 to investigate certain allegations respecting business and financial dealings between German lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber and former Prime Minister The Right Honourable Brial Mulroney. But the Manitoba connection doesn't end there.

Mr. Guy Pratte (Borden Ladner Gervais LLP) was Mr. Mulroney's attorney. Recently, he was named prosecutor for the Canadian Judicial Council's upcoming Public Inquiry into the conduct of Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench Associate Chief Justice (Family Division) Lori A. Douglas. Although the 5-panel members have been identified, no start date, location or terms of reference have been announced. There is provision, however, to hold in-camera sessions closed to the public. CyberSmokeBlog has formally requested intervenor status to present it's concerns regarding the issue of public interest and confidence in Manitoba's judiciary. We will advise readers once a reply is received.

Back to Judge Corrin. To avoid any possible conflict of interest an Ontario Crown will prosecute the case. There has been a delay because the first selected apparently fell ill and was replaced. Today, Toronto Crown Paul McDermott appeared before Judge Stewart to ask for an adjournment to study the file. Neither Messrs Stewart nor Wolson objected. Mr. McDermott advised the court he had spoken with The Law Society of Manitoba to notify it of his involvement and was cleared to proceed.

The next hearing will be Friday, October 14, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in courtroom 308.

Sincerely,
Clare L. Pieuk
