Is Canada moving to the right?

Changes under Stephen Harper's government indicate a shift away from progressive policies

Since taking power in 2006, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government has been slowly moving the country to the political right. What was once known as a liberal-leaning country is now changing its policies on issues like immigration, gun laws, foreign policy, abortion and the environment.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been pushing an increasingly conservative agenda for Canada since he assumed office in 2006. Canada is the first country to pull out of the Kyoto Protocol, has taken a firm pro-Israel stance, increasedThe following infographic shows where the Harper administration has invested new or additional funding in 2011. Under Harper, Canada spent $29.3 billion to purchase and military spending, and has continued to lower corporate tax rates since Harper's tenure.

Meanwhile, spending on social programs and the environment has been small in comparison. The federal deficit has increased under Harper's leadership. Government spending has steadily increased, which many attribute to increases in military spending, while revenue has decreased from increases in tax cuts.
