A member of Parliament who was “rammed” by an apparently intoxicated hit-and-run driver Friday night is using the incident to speak out against impaired driving.
Rathika Sitsabaiesan, NDP MP for Scarborough-Rouge River, said she suffered a minor back injury while leaving her Scarborough home in the passenger seat of her friend’s car.
As her friend pulled out of a parking lot, a driver who was “not in any condition to be operating a vehicle” approached.
With only one possible direction, the friend stopped the car, thinking the other driver would move.
“He stopped, stared my friend in the eye as if to say ‘move out of the way,’” Sitsabaiesan said. “He rammed through our car, pushed it out of way. Then he went back and forth on the road and the walkway.”
The man left the scene and continued driving.
“There were a lot of bystanders,” Sitsabaiesan said. “I was just afraid for other people.”
Police said the man has not been apprehended yet and that he may have been driving a rental car. They are not sure if alcohol was a factor.
As of Thursday, RIDE spot checks by the OPP’s highway safety and GTA division have resulted in 136 people being charged with impaired driving, along with 137 suspensions.
“What people should be understanding is the responsibility they have on the road. They’re taking people’s lives at stake,” Sitsabaiesan said.
