We don't lack for talent!

Hi Clare,

Again, my apologies for the delay in returning your email.

Thank you for your thoughtful interest and questions regarding social media and the courts.  The issues related to ‘the explosive growth of new media’ and citizen journalism recently identified by The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada are certainly under consideration in most courts across the country, including here in Manitoba. The changing technology associated with new media has led to many Canadian courts amending or developing policies on the use of electronic and wireless devices in the coverage of court proceedings.

For now, the Manitoba Courts website (www.manitobacourts.mb.ca) provides information that may assist persons who are planning to attend court; ranging from court room etiquette to court record access policies.  Under the information provided to the media on the site, there is also information on the effects of a Ban on Publication, which would be of assistance to those who intend to publish information about a court proceeding.  In addition, where there is the need to determine the existence of or terms of an order banning publication, inquiries in that regard can be made of appropriate court staff.

Dear Ms Fortier:

On behalf of our readership thank you very much for your reply. No need to apologize. Since early December of last year it seems as though it's been one high-profile trial after another which has literally seen us running from courtroom to courtroom trying to cover as many as three different hearings simultaneously. Have never spent so much time at The Law Courts! It must be the same for you as well.

We hope readers will consult the link you've provided and we've highlighted. It really does contain a wealth of information especially if you've never had occasion to visit The Law Courts.

Regarding the changing technology associated with new media, we certainly hope Manitoba develops an approach (i.e. business model) resulting in policies that become the envy of other provinces and jurisdictions grappling with similar problems and issues. We don't lack for talent.

Sincerely,
Clare L. Pieuk
