"I don't give a s... about the Italian lira!"

Good Day Readers:

That literary gem comes to us courtesy of former President Richard M. Nixon on being asked by then White House Chief of Staff H. R. Haldeman if he wanted to hear a report on the decline of the Italian lira. It came to public attention as a byproduct of the Watergate tapes.

Fast forward to today. Even though the CBC is on fire so to speak the result of significant budget cuts, it's still capable of producing some top drawer investigative reports. Such is it's current series of mini-documentaries on shifting world power. Last night The National aired this excellent report by Senior Washington Correspondent Neil Macdonald. The narrative accompanying the video is entitled, Power Shift Italy: How debt and declining birth rates are destroying la dolce vita.

Was Richard Nixon too dismissive too quickly of the lira?

Sincerely,
Clare L. Pieuk
