An unsung hero - Harold Stoute!
Sometimes we as Canadians are a little too modest given how talented we are - Harold Stoute is yet another example.
This Summer CBC Radio carried a 10-week series, The Late Show, narrated by Canadian - Newfoundland and Labrador icon Gordon Pinsent: http://www.cbc.ca/radiosummer/thelateshow
Mr. Pinsent is a 40-year veteran of theatre, film, television, and radio - actor/playwright/author/director well known to audiences across Canada and in the United States.
The series aired in Winnipeg beginning at 11:00 Sundays mornings - unfortunately today was the last episode detailing the life of Montreal born Harold Stoute who grew up in Toronto's tough inter-city Alexander Park neighbourhood.
Although far from perfect (Harold had seen his share of fights), as a friend you could always count on him to watch your back should you find yourself in trouble. Loving children he was devastated to learn his wife was unable to conceive but through it all re-invented himself by going to as many youth sporting matches as he could while always ready to play with neighbourhood children. His wife tells the story of how it was not unusual for young ones to come to their door to ask if Harold "could come out to play." Particularly touching was the interwiew with a 10-year old boy who described himself as, "Harold's playmate." Sadly, Mr. Stoute died recently at age 44 from complications (aneurysm) following a serious operation.
Needless to say, the neighbourhood and his many little friends were shattered upon learing the news. We think people like Harold should be held up as examples for all Canadians to see the difference one person can make in the lives of those around them both young and old. To this end, we're sending a copy of the posting to Mr. Pinsent to make the following request. Hopefully, he can help us.
Sincerely,
Clare L. Pieuk

Dear Sir:
Would it possible to obtain a transcript of today's show about Harold Stoute so we can share it with our readers who may have missed your program?
Thank You!

Is the Manitoba Human Rights Commission a waste of time and money?
Body Accuses Manitoba Rrights Commission Of Withholding Facts
Joseph Brean
National Post
August 29, 2008
Page A6
B'nai Brith Canada revealed yesterday it is the defendant in a hate speech case at the Manitoba Human Rights Commission that is based on anonymous and vague accusations of Islamophobia and has taken nearly five years to investigate.
"The [Manitoba] Human Rights Commission itself is supposed to be promoting human rights, but in our view in this process it's violating some pretty basic rights: a secret proceeding, a faceless accuser, failure to disclose documents. These are basic procedural rights that are being violated," said David Matas, a prominent human rights lawyer and senior legal counsel to B'nai Brith.
The Jewish human rights group has long been co-operative with and supportive of Canada's human rights commissions, but has recently called for reform to prevent their hijacking as a political platform. This is the first and only time it has been named as a respondent in a hate speech case.
At issue is a conference B'nai Brith sponsored at Winnipeg's city hall in October, 2003, for first responders to acts of terrorism, such as police, firefighters or paramedics.
A central topic was Islamic terrorism, and the presenter was the Higgins Counterterrorism Research Center, a consultancy based in Arlington, Virginia.
B'nai Brith had a representative there, but did not attend all the sessions, and although it was not publicly advertised, there was no formal security to keep people out.
Four months later, a complaint was filed with the MHRC by Shahina Siddiqui, the Winnipeg-based executive director of the Islamic Social Services Association of the United States and Canada, and a member of the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Her complaint alleged a violation of section 18 of the Manitoba Human Rights Act, which prohibits statements that "incite, advocate or counsel discrimination."
"Based on comments from some in attendance that the presentation was biased against Muslims, I conclude that the content of the seminar presented a negative prejudice about Muslims in terms of being probable terrorists. This prejudiced picture would encourage and support racial profiling by first responders and law-enforcement agencies dealing with possible terrorist incidents," the complaint reads.
Ms. Siddiqui did not respond to messages left yesterday at her office and home.
She did not attend the conference, and B'nai Brith has not been told the identities of her informant or informants.
He said their own investigations failed to turn up anyone who remembered hearing anything discriminatory.
"Who knows? If we had a legitimate complaint where we actually had a whole sentence and we knew who said it and we knew who complained, who knows? Maybe there's something there. Hard to say. It's just shadow boxing in the current context," he said.
We're having a David Chartrand look-alike contest!
Definitely not any of them!
Tansi/Good Day Folks:
Was watching a clip last night from a sportscast of the Blue Jays playing the Yankees in the final game at Yankee Stadium. The cameras scanned the spectators and there was Barak Obhama until the announcer hastened to mention it was a look-alike. Got to thinking they have look-alike contests for other famous people like Elvis so why not David Chartrand? If you know anyone who resembles President Chartrand send us their picture and we'll post it - the individual's true identity can remain Anonymous. The winner will receive an all expense paid one-week vacation at Duck Bay, Manitoba's luxurious Presidential Retreat - Camp David.
If successful we'll consider running a look-alike for Manitoba Metis Federation lawyer Murray Trachtenberg. The possibilities are endless. Have a friend or know someone who looks like this?
They'd be serious contenders for our free one-week vacation. Send in your entries today!Sincerely,

Maybe Stephen Harper should grow a beard for the next election!
The Canadian Press
Mike Weir boasts new facial growth for the start of the PGA Tour's playoffs.
Mike Weir decided to take some of Wayne Gretzky's playoff advice to heart.
The two men are currently featured in a PGA Tour commercial where Gretzky advises the Canadian lefty to grow a beard for the FedEx Cup playoffs just as hockey players do for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Lo and behold, Weir arrived for The Barclays tournament this week in New Jersey sporting some facial hair.
"Yeah, it's definitely psychology," Weir said Friday after shooting a 4-under 67 at Ridgewood Country Club. "I was on vacation last week down at a lake and let it grow. [When I] got back I thought, 'hey, it's playoff time, maybe I'll just keep it.'
It's a hockey thing. In hockey, guys grow the beards, so thought I would give it a shot and see if it works."
That 67, combined with Weir's first round 72, left him in a seven-way tie at 139, seven back of leader Steve Stricker. Hunter Mahan is three back of Stricker in second place.
Weir, from Bright's Grove, Ontario entered the FedEx Cup playoffs ranked 43rd.
The top 120 players after The Barclays will be eligible for the Deutsche Bank Championship next week in Norton, Mass. The field will then be cut to 70 for the BMW Championship in St. Louis and to 30 for the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
Oshawa's Jon Mills and Calgary's Stephen Ames missed the cut.

Memory card, memory card who's got the memory card?
Cops Deny Seizing Pictures Of Takedown In Elmwood

It's a classic he-said-she-said quandary - a Winnipeg man has accused a city police officer of seizing his digital camera's memory card, but policy deny keeping any of his belongings.
Paul St. Laurent said the memory card was taken when he was detained while taking pictures of an arrest on Keenleyside Street in Elmwood on Tuesday afternood.
As of yesterday, St. Laurent said the memory card had not been returned and he was considering filing a complaint with the Law Envorcement Review Agency.
St. Laurent did not see anyone remove the card but said it was in the camera when a male officer took it, and missing when police let him out of a cruiser and returned the camera.

Who's judging the judges?
Judge Ernest Murphy appears at a hearing over alleged intimidation of Boston Herald Publisher Patrick Purcell at the Edward Brooke Courthouse (October 7, 2007)
Massachusettes Judge Ernest Murphy Gives Up Bench
Associated Press
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
(www.bostonherald.com)
BOSTON - A judge who sent threatening letters to the Boston Herald’s publisher after winning a $2 million libel award will not work as a judge again in Massachusetts, under a court order announced today.
Judge Ernest Murphy and the state Commission on Judicial Conduct have agreed Murphy is "permanently disabled" from performing his judicial duties and that he would step down, according to the order from the state Supreme Judicial Court.
Murphy has said the libel case with the Herald took a severe physical and emotional toll on him, and that he suffers from post-traumatic stress.
The case began in 2002, after the Herald published a series of stories depicting Murphy as soft on crime. Several quoted Murphy as saying a young rape victim should "Get over it."
Murphy denied making the comment. He sued the Herald, and in 2005, a jury found the newspaper had libeled him and awarded him $2 million.
The agreement announced today came after the Commission on Judicial Conduct initiated a complaint against Murphy in October, alleging that he "suffers from physical and/or mental disabilities that affect his performance."
The complaint and most of the documents related to it were sealed by the court because they contain personal medical information about Murphy.
Murphy’s attorney, Michael Mone, said he was prohibited from commenting on the agreement. Thomas Butters, another attorney who represented Murphy, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Howard Neff, a staff attorney for the commission, would not comment on details of the complaint, but said the court accepted the agreement and "ordered that Judge Murphy shall not sit again as a judge in Massachusetts."
Separately, the Supreme Judicial Court is still weighing whether to impose on Murphy the commission’s recommendation for a 30-day suspension without pay, $25,000 fine and public censure for using court letterhead to write a threatening letter to the Herald’s publisher, Patrick Purcell.
Under the agreement announced Wednesday, Murphy will continue to receive his judicial pay for up to four months. During that period, he must use any accrued vacation and sick time.
But the court rejected Murphy’s request that he remain on paid administrative leave until he retires or the governor grants him a disability pension. The court noted that it does make decisions about pensions.
Murphy could seek a disability pension through the governor or the state retirement board.
A spokeswoman for the Herald could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.
Two days after he won the libel award from the Herald, Murphy sent the publisher a letter telling him to bring a cheque for $3.26 million to a private meeting. A separate single-page postscript warned Purcell that showing anyone the letter would be "a BIG mistake."
In the second letter, Murphy told Purcell he had "ZERO chance" of reversing the jury’s verdict on appeal.
Murphy said he wrote the letters in an attempt to persuade the Herald not to appeal the jury’s verdict.
Last year, the Herald paid Murphy $3.4 million, including $1.4 million in interest.
A case of reverse obstruction of justice?
Tansi/Good Day Readers:
This latest incident involving the use of tasers raises a couple interesting sidebar issues - filming or photographing police activity.
A couple years ago American based Neighbourhood Watch announced it was going to establish another Canadian chapter in Winnipeg. Members planned to patrol high crime areas with video cameras to record suspicious activity, as well as, monitor the police. This immediately raised the question of citizen rights to film law enforcement.
We contacted the RCMP and the Winnipeg Police Service with, "What would happen, for example, if an individual filmed an arrest and was observed doing it?" We couldn't get an answer - no one with whom we spoke at the time seemed to know.
Everyone remembers the tragic October 2007 incident at Vancouver International Airport in which Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski died after being tasered by RCMP officers. The event was captured on a cellular video phone by a citizen. When the police became aware their actions had been recorded they confiscated the device. Only after the young man threatened to go to court was it returned. We are left to imagine what the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's version might have been had the tape not existed.
Yet another troubling situation. After allegedly handcuffing and placing Mr. Paul St. Laurent in a police cruiser, the memory card from his digital camera was removed which he claims police are refusing to return. If true are the police obstructing justice a law they're supposed to uphold? Why doesn't the WPS simply make a copy and return the original to the gentleman?
And what about this? We all know the policy for taser use is essentially the same as that for a handgun but are they issued to all officers on general patrol duty? How many does the WPS have?
The Winnipeg Police Service will not divulge Chief McCaskill's e-mail address only that of his Administrative Assistant so we'll send them a copy of this posting in the hope we get a response.
Sincerely,
Clare L. Pieuk

Two Men Charged In Yesterday's Taser Incident
The Winnipeg Free Press
Updated: August 20 at 11:37 a.m.
Two men Tasered by police in Elmwood Tuesday afternoon have been charged with stolen auto-related offences.
Kyle McKenzie, 21, has been charged with possessing goods obtained by crime, resisting a peace officer, and breaching probation.
Louis Flett, 27, has been charged with possessing goods obtained by crime.
McKenzie and Flett were charged after several Winnipeg police officers from the stolen auto unit chased two men through the East Elmwood residential neighbourhood in the early afternoon.
A police spokesman said that at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, members of the stolen auto unit saw two men enter a stolen vehicle parked in the 300-block of Keenleyside Street.
The suspects fled and were chased by police, who Tasered one man on the grass. Witnesses said the second suspect ran into his mother’s home, where police cornered him in the basement and shot him twice with the Taser device.
Winnipeg Police said there will be no charges laid against a third man who was taken into custody while he was photographing the police chase.
The police spokesman said the third man was taken into custody because he had failed to comply with numerous police requests.
Paul St. Laurent said he was placed in a police cruiser after he refused to stop taking photographs of the police chase. St. Laurent said police removed the memory card from his digital camera and have refused to return it.

OTTAWA - Here's one holiday you won't want ot miss.
A Vancouver student has launched an Internet campaign to create a National Sex Day.
And while it won't be an official holiday, it's sure to be fun.
Jonathan Yaniv, a computer science student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, British Columbia wants to make August 21 a day devoted to the art of love.
The 21-year old is trying to get at least one million Canadians to join the Facebook event "National Sex Day 2008." If he's successful, it will likely be the biggest organized sex event ever.
The Facebook group already has over 130,000 people getting ready to unzip and unwind.
"I thought a special day, just for this type of activity would be the best," said Yaniv.
Vancouver sexologist Dr. Pega Ren thinks the idea is long overdue and wants more Canadians to hop in the sack.
"People should call in well rather than call in sick that day," she said.
Ren said a day devoted to sex and sexual well-being is important because it "de-emphasizes hatred and promotes kindness, loving and sexuality"

Autoworkers' Campaign To Give Politicians The Boot - Hundreds Of Them, Actually
National Post
August 7, 2008
Autoworkers facing unemployment in Windsor, Ontario are starting a campaign to give federal politicians the boot - several hundred boots, in fact.
Dave Crosswelll, an executive member of the Windsor and District Labour Council, is spearheading the Used Wookboot and Shoe Campagin to mail Ottawa as much used fpootwear as possible to MPs to represent the loss of manufacturing jobs in this country. Mr. Crosswell says the boots are being sent as a call for action.
"We're challenging them on their lack of movement on manufacturing reminding them of their responsibility to Canadians to retain manufacturing jobs," he said. The boots will be on their way shortly after Labour Day, headed to the office of Conservative Windsor MP Jeff Watson and Finance Minister Jim Flaherty. Each will bear a personal message from their former owners.

Ms Manners says .....
Don't you love it when you're in a meeting talking with someone or out socially and suddenly they whip out a BlackBerry or cellular phone and for the next several minutes you cease to exist? Isn't giving someone your undivided attention the highest compliment?
And while we're at it, why do people insist on cranking up the ring volume on their cellulars to the strains of Beethoven's 4th Symphony in B Flat Minor or Shostakovich's 4th. Remember "the good old days" when you could actually walk along the streets of Winnipeg and people who didn't know you would smile and say, "hello." Now it seems everyone has a damn telephone stuck in their ear.

Berry Offensive - A Lesson On BlackBerry EtiquetteBy Carolyn McTighe
Winnipeg Sun
August 12, 2008
Page 18
It's a blessing, and a curse.
Though millions rely on the highly addictive BlackBerry, the creation of Canada's Research in Motion, most people would agree that they are still in the dark when it comes to proper etiquette.
And with more and more businesses giving their employees these devices that enable them to be tethered to the office at virtually any hour of the day, many are wondering what is socially acceptable when it comes to e-mail and messaging in the workplace.
"When it comes to PDAs or similar technology it's inconsiderate people that cause the problems, not the technology," says Louise Fox, owner of the Etiquette Ladies and director of Toronto's Protocol Solutions business etiquette.
"The solution is education. BlackBerries, like cell phones, are still relatively new and people need to be educated to become more courteous users. The same courtesy applies to the use of all technology; be respectful and considerate of others and other people's time. If someone does something that annoys you, don't do it yourself."
Karen Mallett, president and chief executive of Winnipeg's Civility Works, says one of the biggest mistakes people make when using their BlackBerry is forgetting that the people and relationships around them are more important than the electronic device in their hands.
"You're not giving anyone your undivided attention if you are continually sneaking glances at your messages just in case someone more important is sending a message," Mallett says. "Think of a similar situation, the work networking event. You are standing and talking to one of your associates and they are looking away, keeping an eye on the door, this wouldn't be acceptable either."
So when should a person pull out their BlackBerry, iPhone or other smartphone and start tapping away as if they were alone? According to Fox, the answer requires good manners and good old fashion common sense.
"Conversations on your Blackberry or cell phone are better carried on in private places where you don't disturb others and won't be overheard," Fox says.
"Even though you aren't speaking when you are e-mailing on your BlackBerry, you shouldn't be texting someone while you are carrying on a face to face conversation with someone else. You may call it multi-tasking, but most people call it just plain rude. The person you are with takes precedence over calling, e-mailing, surfing or checking messages on your BlackBerry."
So whether you're the offender or offended, here are a few pointers to keep in mind:
Think. Before making a call, consider whether it is an appropriate time and place to make a call. Avoid discussing private, emotional or confidential information in public. You never know who might be listening.
Be upfront. When you're in the company of others and expecting an important call or message, let them know beforehand. When the call or message comes in, excuse yourself and take it in a private place.
Avoid the tinkle. Although the restroom affords privacy for some things, it has a high potential for embarrassment and is not the best location for phone calls.
Pay attention. Turn off your BlackBerry during meetings and other quiet settings and let it go to voicemail. Don't e-mail or check for messages. The message alert feature that notifies you a message has arrived is equally annoying to others so turn it off or put it on vibrate. Give 100% to the people you are with.
Keep it private. Do not make business calls in front of others who are not involved in the transaction.
Rock out. Stairway to Heaven and other goofy ring tones are annoying and immature on a professional's BlackBerry.
Be real. Be realistic about your expectations regarding response time. Just because you own a cell phone, BlackBerry or computer, doesn't mean you need to be available at all hours of the day. You control the technology it shouldn't control you.

Winnipeg Police were called to the 1000 block of Jefferson Avenue around 2 a.m. after receiving reports of a man causing a disturbance.
The suspect fell backwards after being tasered and hit his head on the sidewalk. He was initially taken to hospital in critical condition but was upgraded to stable.
